What Is a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical exam is a federally mandated health evaluation required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. If you hold a CDL or operate a vehicle over 10,001 lbs., you are required by law to pass this exam and carry a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC).
Who Needs a DOT Physical?
You need a DOT physical if you:
Hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Drive a vehicle with a gross weight rating over 10,001 lbs.
Transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver)
Transport hazardous materials requiring placarding
Drive interstate or intrastate commercial vehicles

How long does a DOT physical take?
Most exams are done in 30–45 minutes. We keep things moving.
What should I bring?
Valid photo ID, glasses/contacts or hearing aids if used, list of current medications, and any relevant medical records for existing conditions.
How often do I need one?
DOT certificates are valid for up to 24 months. Drivers with certain conditions may require more frequent exams.
